Chatty girls

It's been a few crazy busy weeks around the Robinson homestead.  We finally welcomed the last two girls to the flock.  We are now complete; 2 Barred Rocks, 2 New Hampshire Reds, and 2 Buff Orpingtons (the two little ones in the top right hand corner)
.
All the girls are here!

We've got some rowdy girls on our hands.  They also seem to make a huge mess as soon as we clean one up.  Luckily we have a room that is easy to clean and away from our living space.  I would definitely recommend having a separate space for your chicks.

Growing up!

We needed to update the brooder box with the new additions. This new space has more room for the girls to move around and stretch their wings. Lacy; our little red head has been keeping a watchful eye on her chicks.

Roosting with the crew

Planning my escape
OK, I know I said I would post this weekend; but the weather was just amazing!!!  We did some yard work,  had visitors, played lots of Frisbee, and got the soil ready for the vegetable garden.

The girls have been here for almost a week.  In that week they have outgrown their small brooder box, explored the outdoors, made a new friend, and have been observed by many.

Roosting
Here are the girls hanging out in the smaller brooder box.  We put a small piece of wood that was laying around in the box for them to roost.  The bigger one; as you see pictured above and beside uses the wood to plan her escape.  As soon as we take the cover off she flaps those wings and makes a break for it.   This was our first hint that it was time to upgrade the chicks digs!

Thanks for checking in! Stay tuned for some weekend video footage.

It was a busy day, the chicks arrived, Lacy went to the groomers for her summer cut, and Marybeth attended her company's annual dinner meeting.

Picking up the first two girls!

Two of the girls have arrived.  Picked them up in this cute little box around 3pm today.  They were happy, happy, happy!

Impatiently awaiting...

We have been having beautiful weather here in New Hampshire.  The beautiful weather always gets us outdoors; in the yard preparing for spring and summer.

Waiting on the girls arrival has been difficult.  The excitement is like Christmas morning, I just can't contain myself!  Two of the girls were scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, April 29th.  That morning I headed to my in-laws house about 30 minutes prior to work to set up the girls brooder box.
Brooder box ready to go!

With my phone attached and ringer on; I slowly mulled through the day; anxious for the call to pick up the little girls.  The day came and went and by 3 pm I could not take it any longer.  I called Track Side; received the sad news that they will not be arriving until Wednesday morning.

Wednesday Morning:  Again, I repeat my early morning routine- head into town to turn the brooder heat lamp back on and make sure the box is again ready for my girls to arrive. Again; I go through the motions of the day, anxious again because this morning we have a meeting and I may have to leave to answer "the call."

Wednesday afternoon came and went; still no call about the girls arrival!

Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed they arrive Thursday, or even better on Friday as a group of four!  :)

Thanks for checking in,

Stocking up!

We've been getting the big question lately about the girls actual arrival!  They are scheduled to arrive April 30th.

Today on my lunch break I headed to the local farm and garden store to gather supplies for the girls.  We are heading to Rhode Island this weekend for a quick getaway before the chick craziness begins; we need to be prepared before we leave.

Today's Shopping List:
  1. Chick starter feed
  2. Pine shavings
  3. Water feeder
I was able to buy local! We enjoy supporting local businesses.

With my car all filled with supplies; I asked Robin, (she works at Track-Side Farm and Garden Center) when our chicks would be arriving.

 Our chicken order:

  • 2 Barred Rocks
  • 2 New Hampshire Reds
  • 2 Buff Orpingtons
Now as most of our friends and family are aware; I like to have a schedule and stick to that schedule.  Back to the original arrival date of April 30th.  My plan; pick up chicks, get them settled at the in-laws (Thanks Mom & Dad), head to work for the day.

Actual arrival; each set of chicks arrives on a different day!!  (&%#$) Damn the man!
  • 2 Barred Rocks (April 30th)
  • 2 New Hampshire Reds (May 3rd- Happy 5th Wedding Anniversary Hubby) {Our good friends Riley and Abbie are going to pick-up/chick sit for the day-they are also getting new chicks}
  • 2 Buff Orpingtons (May ??-unknown)

Raising Chickens Lesson #1 : Planning ahead is great, but leave some wiggle room.  Maybe a little more reading is in order; here is the book Lacy and I picked up at our Library during our afternoon walk.

Lesson #2: Visit your local library!

     Thanks again for reading along!
