Stocking up!

We've been getting the big question lately about the girls actual arrival!  They are scheduled to arrive April 30th.

Today on my lunch break I headed to the local farm and garden store to gather supplies for the girls.  We are heading to Rhode Island this weekend for a quick getaway before the chick craziness begins; we need to be prepared before we leave.

Today's Shopping List:
  1. Chick starter feed
  2. Pine shavings
  3. Water feeder
I was able to buy local! We enjoy supporting local businesses.

With my car all filled with supplies; I asked Robin, (she works at Track-Side Farm and Garden Center) when our chicks would be arriving.

 Our chicken order:

  • 2 Barred Rocks
  • 2 New Hampshire Reds
  • 2 Buff Orpingtons
Now as most of our friends and family are aware; I like to have a schedule and stick to that schedule.  Back to the original arrival date of April 30th.  My plan; pick up chicks, get them settled at the in-laws (Thanks Mom & Dad), head to work for the day.

Actual arrival; each set of chicks arrives on a different day!!  (&%#$) Damn the man!
  • 2 Barred Rocks (April 30th)
  • 2 New Hampshire Reds (May 3rd- Happy 5th Wedding Anniversary Hubby) {Our good friends Riley and Abbie are going to pick-up/chick sit for the day-they are also getting new chicks}
  • 2 Buff Orpingtons (May ??-unknown)

Raising Chickens Lesson #1 : Planning ahead is great, but leave some wiggle room.  Maybe a little more reading is in order; here is the book Lacy and I picked up at our Library during our afternoon walk.

Lesson #2: Visit your local library!

     Thanks again for reading along!

A little elbow grease...

I was really looking forward to a sunny Saturday; a day where I could enjoy being outside all day.  Instead, I woke up to gray windy skies and a temp of maybe 20.... Why can't it just be spring!!

After some early morning TV/ doggie play time; we ventured outdoors.  Lacy, our golden had a sleep over party with her friends Ollie and Emma!  They successfully beheaded four dog toys and managed to each get a very quick swim in the ice water pond.  The dogs are definitely ready for spring to arrive.

Chad works 6-7 days a week, building a beautiful mountain-side home at a local ski resort; so he gets out of doing lots of the dirty work to prepare for the six little chicks arrival.  Today's adventure:  clean out the existing structure.  Including bringing the debris to the transfer station!

Lacy hard at work...

Here is an end of the day photo.  Lacy sure was tuckered out.  Two trips to the town transfer station (makes for two treats from the attendants); we now have a solid base to work from.

Tomorrow is Sunday Family day;  heading out to a local maple sugar farm for a breakfast and then a trip into town to price out materials for the coop!

Thanks for reading! Only about 23 more days to go until the girls arrive.

A fresh start...

Welcome to our blog!

We appreciate the fresh air provided by the beautiful mountains surrounding our home; the ease of living in the open space, and all joys that life can bring.  We are two hard working people; Chad is a builder and Marybeth just started a new job in the property management field.  We have a dog, Lacy; shes a three year old red headed golden.  We also have two cats; Dante and Taylor who are about six years old.  And we the caretakers of a beautiful Victorian house in Northern New Hampshire.

As an addition to our sweet family; we are about to gain six little laying chicks. We are about to embark on an exciting journey and look forward to sharing with our family and friends.

Thanks for joining us!
